about

August 2021— Tunnel Beach | Oceanside, OR

The tide resides and leaves behind an enigmatic, delicate voice. The low rumble of ships passing in the distance and the spattered commotion of fellow summer tourists seems to fade. An austere crackling sound claims the foreground; as it grinds sand and expels air to whisper from the protruding rock formations. Thousands of acorn barnacles are sounding in a dense yet quiet polyphony. As I get closer, I notice the sounds become more active and frequent. This highlights the impact of my presence their environment, transposing it to a palpable and haptic level. I notice my breath as it sinks and slows, my steps become tip-toes, and intimacy of these small, quiet sounds shrinks the vastness of the ocean before me.
. . .

Like any memory. as time passes, elements from this moment fade imperceptibly and irregularly. The shade of the sunset, the dampness and texture of the sand, the arrangement of people around me, and so on, have all faded to varying degrees. However, the barnacle orchestra and their impact on my sense of corporeality remains; like a frequency appearing and dissolving: a sort of memory-oriented tinnitus.

A Voice From Below is a rumination on, and an abstract reconstruction of, this memory. Field recordings, synthesized material, found sounds, and sympathetically resonating- particulates in acrylic boxes are weaved together to create an environment that buoys between degrees of reality and dream-like states of fog. Drawing inspiration from the philosophical principles presented in Steph Ceraso’s “Sounding Composition: Multimodal Pedagogies for Embodied Listening”, the sonic, visual, and aesthetic makeup were each composed through the lens of Listening as a multi-sensory practice.

This piece was originally presented as an audio-visual installation at The WaveCave at the California Institute of the Arts from March 6th-10th, 2023. These recordings are representations of the electronic sounds from the space.

*States A-C were composed from December 2022- February 2023, States D and E, were composed in September 2023 as part of a second iteration for the Experiments in Electronic Sound Festival at CalArts.
